Asier Polo, cello
Born in Bilbao, Asier Polo studied with Elisa Pascu, María Kliegel, and Ivan Monighetti. He soon stood out winning the first prizes in Cello and Chamber Music at the National Young Musicians Competition.
Recent and future engagements includes concerts as a soloist with most of the main Spanish Orchestras, as well as other foreign orchestras such as the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionalle della RAI, Dresdner Philharmonie, Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester, Orchestre de Paris, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonic of Minas Gerais (Brasil), Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (USA), or the Basel Symphony Orchestra. He has played under the baton of very important conductors such as Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Günter Neuhold, John Axelrold, Christian Badea, Claus Peter Flor, Günther Herbig, Antoni Wit, or Anne Manson, as well as the main Spanish Conductors.
He has been invited by notorious festivals like the ones held in Nantes (France), Ohrid (Yugoslavia), Rome, Lisbon, Morelia (México), or the Quincena Musical in San Sebastián.
He has appeared with great artists such as Josep Colom, Gerard Caussé, the Janáček Quartet, or Alfredo Kraus, who invited him in his last years to play solo at his concerts, performing at the Maggio Fiorentino, the London Covent Garden, the Tonhalle in Zurich, or the prestigious Musikverein in Vienna.
He is devoted to present music, especially from his native country. Compromised with new compositions, he has a great interest in unknown repertoire for the main audience (Tomás Marco, Carmelo Bernaola). Composers such as Gabriel Ercoreca, Luis de Pablo and Antón García Abril have dedicated to Asier Polo some of their Works. He has been able to combine modern music with the great classical repertoire, covering all the way from Bach’s Suites, classical and romantic Concertos, to contemporary music.
Asier Polo has been awarded numerous prizes, and amongst others, the “Ojo Crítico” by the Radio Nacional de España(2002) and the Fundación CEOE Prize for Musical Interpretation (2004). In 2009 he was appointed “Ilustre de Bilbao”.
He has recorded for important labels such as Claves, RTVE, Marco Polo, or Naxos, playing pieces such as the Concertos by Usandizaga, Villarojo, Escudero, or Rodrigo.
He is currently professor at the Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco. Asier Polo plays a Francesco Rugieri Cello (Cremona 1689) purchased in collaboration with Banesto.
