As reflected in the prestigious Opera Magazine, Agustín Prunell- Friend had a great success at the premiere of the concert version of the Opera Anacreón by Rameau. Agustín Prunell-Friend (Batile) had the high-wire tenor act, whose effect in such pieces is to transform the mortal into something god-like: how could any girl not fall for this bloke and his high notes? Batile, who otherwise might appear a somewhat weak-willed individual, triumphed.

The veteran Spanish conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos gave the New York Philharmonic audience everything it had come to Avery Fisher Hall for on Thursday evening, and more. He also brought along a valuable asset in the chorus, the Orfeón Pamplonés from Pamplona, Spain. New York suffers no shortage of excellent choruses, whether homegrown or drawn from the Westminster Choir College in New Jersey. But it was rewarding to hear a Latinate sensibility and temperament applied to these bawdy texts, many of them in Latin.

After producing an overwhelming performance of Mahler’s colossal Second Symphony, rewarded by a 10-minute standing ovation from a packed house, the new Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic could not be accused of easing himself into the job.
