Carlos Kalmar was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He studied conduction with Karl Österreicher in the Musikhochschule in Vienna. In 1984 he won the First Prize in the orchestral conducting contest Hans Swarowsky in Vienna, beginning then to conduct very successfully most of the Austrian orchestras as the Wiener Symphoniker, ORF Symphony Orchestra, Tonkünstler Orchestra and the Wiener Kammerorchester. He also conducted the principal orchestras in Europe, such as the NDR SInfonieorchester of Hamburg, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Rundfunk-Orchester, Philharmonische Staatsorchester of Bremen and the NDR Radio Orchestra of Hannover, among others.
Carlos Kalmar is currently Principal Conductor and Director of the Chicago’s Grant Park Festival (since 2000), Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Oregon Symphony (since 03/04 season) and Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta y Coro de RTVE in Spain (since 11/12 season).
